If you’re thinking about growing your own marijuana, then it’s a good idea the read up about the different types of cannabis available. Cannabis strains are variations of the plant and there are three (or 4) well known varieties. They are sativa, indica and ruderalis. The fourth one is a hybrid variation.
Sativa’s grow taller, are lighter in colour and have thinner leaves.
Indica’s are shorter and more dense, producing thicker flowers.
Ruderalis is shorter than an indica but has the thin leaves like a sativa.
When choosing a strain, you should look less for whether it’s a sativa, indica, or hybrid, and more on the cannabinoids (THC & CBD) content, as well as which terpenes it has.
Find out more about what a cannabis strain actually is, what terpenes are and what the most popular types of strains there are on the market.
Sativa and Indica are the two main types of cannabis plants, commonly used to describe both growth patterns and general effects. Sativa strains are typically associated with uplifting, energetic, and more cerebral effects, making them a popular choice for daytime use, while Indica strains are known for their relaxing, calming, body-focused effects, often preferred in the evening. From a plant perspective, Sativas tend to grow tall with narrow leaves and longer flowering times, whereas Indicas are shorter, bushier, and faster to mature. That said, this distinction is a simplification—most modern cannabis strains are hybrids, and the actual effects depend far more on cannabinoids like THC and CBD, as well as terpene profiles, rather than whether a strain is labelled Sativa or Indica.
